Coinbase Review

Coinbase is a bitcoin wallet and an exchange that allows to buy, use, accept and sell crypto-currency. The company called Coinbase Inc. is located in San Francisco, California. The company is growing rather quickly as of now there is 23 full-time employees working there. An outstanding amount of thirty thousand merchants use Coinbase’s platform to accept bitcoin for their services. Coinbase’s site states that they have 1,200,000 consumer wallets at the moment, however they do not act as a marketplace where you can buy or sell bitcoins from/to other users.

Coinbase’s founders are Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. The company was founded in June of 2012. After attracting some considerably generous investments the startup rocketed and now is really popular bitcoin platform.

Server of the exchange is located in San José, Costa Rica.

Coinbase does not provide any information about the turnover, however, they do have a chart on their site with the number of a bitcoin transactions done per day on their platform, which averaged seventy thousand transactions per day for the last 30 days.

The application base that uses Coinbase’s API is huge, they promote the creation of applications and put them on their site. There also is an official Coinbase app for Android users which is quite popular and well reviewed on the Google play store, has more than fifty thousand installs and a rating of 4.2.

Coinbase charges a quite high one percent fee for each transfer from bitcoin to dollars or from dollars to bitcoin. The same 1% bitcoin convertion fee applies for merchants using Coinbase’s platform, but recently they started waiving the fee for the first $1,000,000.

Very thoroughly explained API with lots of examples how to use it is available on site. Many have used it, also, Coinbase’s official Androip app is built only using their public API.

The support side is developed fairly reasonably. You can leave a public question, which are answered quite sufficiently, also, there is a way to e-mail your question or request as there always is, but probably the most used way of support is live chat, which they have implemented and get a huge plus from us for it.

All in all, Coinbase seems to be top one pick if you are a merchant and want to start accepting bitcoin for your service. Also, if you would rather prefer to buy bitcoins directly from the company this would be your choice.

We liked:

- 1,200,000 consumer wallets
- 30,000 merchants
- Light and intuitive design
- Promotion of apps
- App for android
- Active blog

We weren’t so sure about:

- Fees
- Mobile wallet

We hated:

- No phone number
